I have not yet read the novel, but I am aware of the creative liberties taken in this adaptation. I believe they don't necessarily hold it back but enhance the story. It was made to tell a more personal story and succeeded at its storytelling purpose. I was intrigued and invested in the story and themes of family and love conveyed in the film. At some points I found the themes of family trauma and belonging emotionally moving. The passion and craftsmanship that went into making this film really shines through and it really heightened my appreciation for filmmaking. The story sort of reminded me of a dark, gothic version of Beauty and the Beast. If you are a fan of the novel expecting a stellar retelling, then this may not be for you.
