The Thin Red Line
This now takes the top spot for my favourite war movie of all time. What a stunning movie. War films will always be plagued by resorting to the same or similar themes and this wasn't entirely different in that regard but Mallick definitely explores a new facet of the trope by juxtaposing the role and impact of war in the greater context of humanity being a part of nature. Beautifully done.
In terms of the technical side. The performances were great across the board but in particular Jim Caviezel was a stand out, as were Sean Penn and Nick Nolte. As expected the cinematography was brilliant but in particular I loved how the pacing was slowed right down for long shots of nature, sometimes mid-battle scene, which felt completely unique for a war film. Also quite interesting to hear Hans Zimmer laying the ground work for a lot of his future scores which have become iconic, aka Inception, Dunkirk, and Interstellar. Lots of similarities in there. Overall this is right up there for me. 9/10
