Perfect Blue
the part that got under my skin was how exhausting it looked to constantly perform a version of yourself for strangers. idol fans, managers, directors, even random people online acting like they own pieces of you just because you smiled at them once. it's so crazy
what really impressed me is how the movie refuses to hold your hand. scenes blur together so naturally that halfway through i stopped trying to “solve” it and just let the paranoia hit me.
satoshi kon knows exactly when to snap you back into focus with some horrifying little detail. and the animation aging slightly rough around the edges weirdly helps the atmosphere. everything feels grimy and unstable.
