Sunset Boulevard
hollywood loves to chew you up,
spit you out,
and then act shocked when you come back unhinged.
sunset boulevard gets that and honestly, i think it gets it better than most of the industry even today. gloria swanson playing norma desmond is one of those casting choices that doesn’t just work. she’s echoing, and it’s terrifyingly perfect. this movie feels like hollywood writing a confession letter it never meant for anyone to read.
the decaying mansion, the silent film reels, the monkey funeral, i love it, it’s camp, it’s horror, it’s sad as hell. the pacing’s tight, and the script is mean in the best way, full of bite and delusion.
joe gillis’ voiceover is almost too cool for someone who ends up face-down in a pool, which honestly adds to the charm. the commentary on ageism is still sharp especially when you realize actresses over 40 are still being shoved into corners unless they produce their own roles.
it's uncomfortable, and that's the point. and the final scene? burned into my brain, rent-free, forever.
