The Master
My mate Cian has been trying to get me to watch this for a while now and I can say after watching this, that I loved it.
The performances from Joaquin Phoenix and Philip Seymour Hoffman are absolutely magnetic. Every scene between them feels like a battle, a confession, and a love story all at once. Their relationship is impossible to define, somehow existing as mentorship, manipulation, friendship, obsession, dependency, therapy, and heartbreak all at the same time.
Paul Thomas Anderson turns post-war loneliness into something strangely beautiful. Beneath all the power struggles and philosophical debates is a deeply human story about people searching for connection, purpose, and somewhere to belong.
I still can't decide whether Freddie needed a father, a friend, a cult leader, or a therapist. Maybe that's the point. What I do know is that I couldn't look away for a single minute of its 137-minute runtime.
Joaquin Phoenix spends the film moving through the world like a feral goblin barely held together by instinct, while Philip Seymour Hoffman carries himself with the confidence of a man convinced he has all the answers. Watching those two forces collide is endlessly captivating.
A challenging, hypnotic, and deeply rewarding film that will linger long in my mind after the credits rolled.
Not bad Cian, not bad..
I need to watch more PTA now!
