Apocalypse Now
There are two of you, one that kills and one that glows
Watched the very long directors cut so don't know what was added - turns out that French family wasn't in it... Do look for it it's crucial to the messaging for me
Ben is sent to the heart of the Vietnam war to cross through the heart of Vietnam and meet a crazy old general in Cambodia. This film is by no doubt a road movie, we see him and some friends dropped off and go insane from exposure to violence and death. This is sparked by a French family they meet and realize that it was never about the commies, it was for victory and bloodlust. This is reflected when they finally reach the temple and see a crazy person decorating in death and learns that his country is just like him. Despite that he defeats everything against him and dents the crown after killing him
An anti war masterpiece which doesn't refrain from violence and hellish imagery. It's like a new perspective on THC1 but from the prisoners in the first half when we see lust in full effect with the playboy sequences, later we see the effects of drugs and finally violence.
War corrupts people and that is the message. Pair that with stunning cinematography and some of the greatest and most likeable performances and you have a brilliant film, my favourite Coppola as I write this.
