Blue
May 2nd this year, I started to watch a film that I saw as the final destination of pretention, I got a bit of a whim talking to my friends about this films nature and joking that we'll see it in cinemas for my birthday. That being Bela Tarr's Satantango, a 7½ hour masterpiece which currently sits in my favourites.
July 21st this year, I started to watch a film I saw as the final destination of cinema, blue 🔵. Just that. It's also well received and I also got a kick out of saying that I will watch it to friends, it mostly got hit with responses referencing the meme where people treated colours as films, I suppose that is what it is.
Blue 🔵 is Jarman's swan song, a true grand finale of reductionism, Jarman passed of AIDS mère months after having premiered this film. A premier I do think would have been unforgettable, me and a bunch of other people sitting in a room, watching one of the greatest pieces of cinema ever crafted.
I do think it's a bit rich calling this cinema. I do think it's quite rich calling it poetry. I think it's quite rich calling it anything. It's just blue 🔵. How horrible is that, the end of pretention a final destination of cinema. Not only conscious and thus acknowledging of the fourth wall but also dead, by suicide, losing all visual storytelling in place of a blue 🔵 screen, just a blue 🔵 screen. That must be madness to imagine, a true death of life.
But that isn't the imagination of Jarman, the blindness he talks of is not such of traditional sense of overwhelming brightness or darkness but overwhelming blue 🔵. A wave, or perhaps a block of ice, a depression, something cold, dead, unnatural, intriguing, calming, omnipresent.
Yesterday I finished Maggie Nelson's Bleuets, a piece of abstract poetry which pays homage to Jarman as well as many other artists. I believed blue 🔵 there to be a theme for our soul, what we repress, the secrets we keep, and let's that blue 🔵 vomit all over the book in an almost stream of consciousness flow.
Blue 🔵 very much talks about the 20th Century treatment of the Gays, especially within the 80s and 90s, the AIDS epidemic or as I should perhaps say, the AIDS genocide. I think that's far more suitable as it wiped out a genocidal of people doing as they were born as, boys who liked kissing boys. If wasn't a silent scream, but when it was heard, Mr Ronald Reagan and such shame on their names, used it to channel more hate in these already marginalized communities.
Perhaps that is the tragedy in blue 🔵. The intimidation, the silence of the visuals, the music, the bordem, Jarman and many others had to sit around and wait to die, taking medication that triggers bomb scanners and puts tumors in animals. But eh' if you're Magic Johnson you're doing alright.
So what does one do when confronted with an ever approaching death and a field of blue 🔵. You regret and reminise, you philosophise and you fantasise. That is the most of this
That bluntness and the difficulty to approach it and the realism that comes with it is how a Blue 🔵 screen can be a perfect work of art
