Love Exposure
Love Exposure - A vulgar and extreme Christian reflection on what it means to do and to let others to do. Encapsulated in love.
I'm editing my home review after hearing someone think about this deeply and it got me thinking deeply, I first heard of this film scrolling through the top 250 and seeing a cool poster and reading that description and the runtime. I got up early one Saturday and thought, "eh, why not." And it started.
Themes:
Love Exposure shows love (no suprise there) and what happens when you reject love, when you learn to love, when you exploit love and most importantly when you do something in love. It does this through religion, wether the 0 cult or Christianity or even the underground basement Yu finds himself in; family, wether the near-insest that Koike gets involved with, Yu's mother dieing or Yoko's mother. We see love in family and people doing for family. Exploitation of love, Sono criticizes the hypersexualisation and pornographic tendencies here through a vulgar show of comedy, it is crucial that you understand that this film criticizes this instead of glamouroses it.
Characters:
Yu is not a good guy but he does it in love and he has his motives albeit extreme that is a lesson here people may be strange but they do it in love, that's their choice. Yu represents love and what he does in love. Yu's love exposure is from it being taken away when he was hooked on it, this leads him to go down a path of exploiting love
He seems love, his Virgin Mary in love for his mother
He joins up skirt photography in love for his father, in order to be forgiven and be closer to him
He saves Yoko from joining the 0 cult for the love of her and the love of love itself.
Yu is crazy in love, he is exploiting love, his life's purpose is finding love
He, after losing a bet takes the persona of Lady Scorpion, whom Yoko falls in love with, this is another push in love. We have to see Yoko at a crossroads of accepting the fact that she thought of, being a lesbian, or keeping more holy.
Speaking of Yoko, she represents when you learn love, she at the beginning hated all men, with the sole exception of Kurt Cobain, this is due to an abusive relationship with her father. The song [it's hollow] by Yura Yura Teikoku plays during her introduction and a personal favourite of mine is when she physically destroys that old life to live a new one with Kaori, a life of fun and a life of Jesus, the second man she approves of. Yoko's love exposure is leaving violence for love
Koike is similar to Yoko in that she had an abusive relationship with her father, who certainly pushed the boundaries on love. Yoko doesn't love love, she doesn't do anything in love. That makes her a psychopath, she uses love to manipulate people into the 0 cult where they don't love. Koike is violent and manipulative and the villain. Her love exposure hurt her and her final moments were seeing a true act of love when Lady Scorpion attacks the 0 cult headquarters.
Pornography is it's own character in a way. And despite seeming as the rawest form of love, it really really really isn't, it is treated as art to Yu, who doesn't even feel anything from it for it is not his Virgin Mary. When Yu is in the basement with the creeps we see him forgive acting like his father had to perverts, not like the superhero that Yu presents himself as but sick people. Porn is criticized, it was a step too far for his father and Yu is being shown sacreligously for it, the performance there is great by the way. Love exposure in porn is great and fake, it is not true and isn't done in love but done for prophit and those who push love too far.
To reinstate what pushing love is, it's the people who we disagree with but are forced to see how they operate and thus understand them. We learn that no matter how false they are, they do it in love and that makes them a person. Why do that? Why show Renton doing heroin and doing some other awful things in Trainspotting because it's a movie and we can be extreme, it's going to be a turnoff for them and it sucks to be them and Sono wanted to show the power of love and if you think there's lines to that you miss his point? As Jesus did say... Love your neighbor, don't love the sin but show mercy to the sinner
Love Exposure is a masterpiece of love and doing. Everything the heros do and say is in someway for love, unlike the antagonist which is for the opposite. Sono teaches us that we should do stuff in love and that makes us people
