Parasite
How does one begin to write an essay on what is a perfect film with a beyond perfect message. Parasite - the friendly face of ignorance and the knife that kills it, the fight for scraps in a rich house, the plight that people face and the goodness it brings the rich. To paraphrase Darren Carver-Balsiger this film isn't about who the real parasites are in society. For me, it's about the necessity to fight and bend the rules for the poor to survive and how ignorance forces them to.
Parasite is genre bending, the first half is 'oh look at these cheeky devils making their way into a living telling the odd fib and ha ha that guy is taking a wee on their house and she's filming it,' it drops your guard before the reveal and when it is revealed how it's not sneaking for greed but for actual life the message changes, they aren't parasites they are just trying to live.
The wealth divide is its own thing and Bong challenges that subtlety, the two houses being filmed as if facing eachother and a call back to Kurosawa's High And Low with the house being on a hill, only there is no one to face the struggles and warm to his worker only a smiling face, ignorant to the pain. Assuming that you are ok, leaving you a worker until you snap and show that you can break the rules, you are more than labour and that you will not accept the lie that they are generous.
