Persona
This film... Is a film!
It isn't like many other of Bergman's masterpieces where it tries to imitate reality or complete fantasy but instead an abstract imagine. That is clear, from the get-go, with the opening montage. It's a film, it's not real, not logical and not accidental. A snapshot into the genius of Bergman. That's how we should treat it, feel it, understand why but not how.
The film's cast is miniscule and most of it is between 2 women, one mute and her caretaker. Together they live, alone, they have to sit and naturally when presented with a non judgemental face who just listens, you talk, and talk, and expose. Expose your secrets of abortion and an unplanned orgy. The mite has secrets too, secrets of resentment and actually noting what her carer talks about. Over time, they become the same.
Why and how is something I didn't get until now, a few months after watching. Bergman asks a simple question, what is being? And how do we affect being? What is our identity? When exposing herself or when hiding herself with secrets, why are they different, why are we different when who we are with. Are we us or a product of our surroundings? And if we are a product of our surroundings, given the same surroundings and enough time, do we become the same person. That is just the beginning of my digestion and this is high on my rewatch list so I can get to know this more
