High and Low
YES THIS IS THE KIDNAPPING MOVIE.
kurosawa unlocks a whole new level of filmmaking here which i don’t think i’ve ever witnessed before. and the range is just unmatched — brilliant single-room character dilemma in the first act, a fantastic investigative thriller in the second act, and a visceral third act which really lands the ending, all while maintaining strong narrative and thematic continuity. INSANE!!
of all the amazing elements of this film, the part that’s immediately sticking with me is the compositions. kurosawa crafts these gorgeous tableaus which are so striking, dynamic, and thematic. i’ve really never seen it done so perfectly before.
also, now that i’ve watched this i see its influence everywhere — from parasite to rush hour.
