Bones and All
i love the contrast between sweetness and cannibalism <3.
I was really surprised by how much I enjoyed this film. I'm not a big fan of Luca Guadagnino’s work, but this just might be my favorite film from him. I might not be reading this correctly, but cannibalism is often represented as passionate or obsessive love. This film felt more like a representation of drug addiction while also trying to emphasize their trauma-bonded love for each other. The way Lee talked about eating anyone, he described it as a high, an itch that's been finally scratched.
As much as Maren and Lee started with this cannibalistic behavior since they were born, the way they were raised was a heavy push toward it. Maggie is someone who was neglected by both her parents and was forced into young independence, which led her to the exploration of finally doing the act of cannibalism.
While Lee was heavily abused by his dad and felt like the only way to end everything was by doing the worst of things. The two definitely also feel like an extreme trauma-bonded relationship, which doesn't always lead to the best of things. But overall, I thought this film was really beautiful it felt so simple with an old 80s feel. The way this story felt so delicate but the contrast with the plot of cannibalism made it so moving in a way.
