Late Spring
A timeless tragedy of patriarchial and traditionalist society. Late Spring highlights the power of social pressures in a way I did not expect from a movie from 1949. Noriko is coerced into marriage by her entire social environment. Consequentially, her eventual consent to the arranged marriege feels hollow and tragic. Her bright smile that's so present in the earlier half of the movie becomes a thinly veiled facade that barely manages to hide her pain and sadness as she loses her autonomy. Tremendous acting by Setsuko Hara.
Notably, her eventual husband never actually appears on-screen. Instead, Late Spring focuses on the central father-daughter relationship.
A hypnotizing slow-burn.
