Yi Yi
Very hard to pin down with words because they would inevitably reduce the emotional power this movie holds. Captures life and the totality of emotional experience unlike anything else. Yi Yi shows the deeply personal in its universality. Even calling this a family drama feels reductive in its epic scale. Like Yang-Yang, Yi Yi shows us what we know well but can't see ourselves.
Some of the most stunning images I've seen in a long time. The camera is calm and distant but close and personal. It's both intimate and melancholic as well as loud, hectic and chaotic.
One of those movies that will definitely age with the audience's personal experience. In its universality, it offers something different for anyone. It's also almost impossible to digest everything it has to offer on a single viewing.
I've been learning Chinese for the past three months and I'm pretty proud of how much I actually understood.
