Materialists
i knew it was going to be something different than it seemed, and im so glad i took the risk in watching it (ironic). an insanely good catfish
this movie so obviously knows all of what it displays, it plays with it in our face in the same way life gives us our answers in its own form, its immanent “objectivity” (that is so far from our own, our “doing math”), and the same way our unconscious screams at us what we are missing/fear/need, these things that are DEEPLY at the core of everything we do.
prejudice, objectification, expectation, “math”, wants, materialist needs. all of these things are so entitled to stay in our mind (to each that have them), replicating in the same vain as how we think our parents influence stays in our life (something this movie even goes over lightly). it screams to me that something is obviously so explicitly there that i wish i could say, that everything you believe in this logical world is so intrinsic to your personality and wants yet it always fails and dissatisfies you, and that this dissatisfaction is just a “part of the risk”.
towards the end, it gives way to something else without naming it: a more humanistic nature away from materialism, a genuine love. she’s torn apart from her external influence from someone who values her materialistically (that she does as well, yet is torn by a lack of a humanistic feeling), and the opposite.
our need to be human in all of our expression is always visibly and explicitly apparent in everything. every single thing. the best critique of everything completely logical, capitalistic, materialistic, etc. is just that humanly we need something MORE.
