I genuinely have so much to think about after finishing this movie, and I mean that in the best possible way. I want to dig in and I want to hear people’s interpretations because there were so many subtle moments that felt like they left a huge impact. For me, the score especially enhanced the sort of eerie tone of what is, at its core, a heartbreaking and unsettling story. Some moments seemed so ridiculous that they felt kinda perfectly jarring from the darker, more emotional moments. I think this contrast added more weight to those darker scenes and provided some necessary context for why the events in the final act unfolded the way they did. Natalie Portman was genuinely unbelievable. I want to watch it again and just focus on specifically her because she was never off, and I think she constantly made choices big and small that added so much to her performance. Julianne Moore played a complex and wide range of emotions incredibly well, and it was very interesting to see the different demeanors she would portray depending on who she was conversing with. Charles Melton gave a heartbreaking and extremely captivating performance. I think he was able to portray his character in a way that best represented what he has experienced and how he has been affected in such a deep and traumatic way. He was just so so so good, and had certain scenes I will be thinking about for a long time. I also want to shout out the kids in this movie. They were also able to contribute to some incredibly memorable moments, and I think their performances provided so much to the overall emotion of the story. Anyway, this has been a very long review, but this was an excellent movie, and it’s making me think a lot. I’m jotting this down now cause I want to get stuff written while it’s fresh, but I may come back to this in the morning.
