Definitely has shallow messaging and I feel this view of hyper-violent media’s effect on society focuses on only a small part of the issue, choosing to ignore the thoroughly violent landscape in which we live and how this landscape is shaped by the systems we exist within. Some of the critiques for sure ring true, such as its portrayal of the men who are particularly obsessed with violent and specifically sexually violent movies, but I wish they went further and identified or at least dealt with root causes beyond the media itself.
What makes this movie special, though, are the visuals, the performances, and a constantly engaging story. Highly recommend for people who like ‘elevated horror’ but are sick of the repetitive form of presentation that has taken over that genre
