Hamnet
So much to love about this. The performances, most notably Buckley and young Jupe (although the elder Jupe does a great job of acting as an actor ((although his quiet whispers surely wouldn't have reached the back of the audience, but sure look))). The puppet show that neatly summarises the astonishing chapter documenting the journey of a flea from Egypt to England. Mescal's angry, impotent drunkenness. The unrelenting commitment to grimy fingernails.
I've read a lot of reviews since seeing this, most of them dismissive, but this was powerful and beautiful. Why do I love this film while expressing frustration at the historically inaccurate Saipan? Perhaps because I know this is a fantasy. The beauty is in the possibility, rather than the reality.
