10/10

where do i start????

well, i saw oppenheimer 6x, 3 in theatres, 3 @ home. and i found myself appreciating and loving the movie more after every single watch. oppenheimer is so rich in depth and is an overwhelming film with a pace that seems to never stop moving. due to this, i think me and almost everyone that watched this for the very first time was bombarded with names and events that we hoped to understand from such a heavy dialogue movie. which is why on my 2nd and 3rd watch, i loved everything even more because i learned new things, understood new things and had a greater respect for the film. i have just one complaint from the movie… which holds it back from being perfect, which is the florence pugh sex scenes, i didn’t love them, i didn’t hate them, i recognize that they are integral to the story, but they were done in such a way that only nolan can think of doing, which is not at all what i was expecting, and to think that THAT is my only minor complaint says a lot about the movie. good god where do i start about describing why it was so damn good?

i’ll start off with the performances- i genuinely watched cillian murphy single handedly give one of the most brilliant and perfect performances i’ve ever seen in my life. i watched rdj come for the best supporting actor oscar effortlessly (he was most definitely one of my favourite parts of the movie), and i also watched matt damon, emily blunt, florence pugh, josh hartnett, jason clarke, and everyone in the whole fucjing cast give their best performances… what an achievement.

besides the acting was nolan’s distinct direction and screenplay, which is his best ever work in that aspect. i think oppenheimer’s screenplay is genuinely one of the best i’ve ever seen put to screen in the last decade. how can you make talking about such heavy subject matter , which so much to talk about be so interesting and gripping? tell me why i was so intrigued by yapping about security clearances and the mccarthy era ??? anyways jesus christ nolan deserves everything

the next best thing was the technicality of oppenheimer, which simultaneously has the greatest score, editing, practical effects, cinematography, and sound design in the last 10 years. some of these scenes are something else, to name a few of my favourite - the trinity test (most intense experience i’ve ever had), the AEC meeting, the intro and the climax of the film which was the end trial scene. just for these singular scenes alone, i see 5 academy awards handed right there.

the brilliance of the movie and its message just gets me going. this movie genuinely fucks so hard it’s insane. it has no reason to go so hard and to look so amazing but it does anyway… i can speak on this movie for hours.

one of the best films ever made

9.5/10

not much to say about this.

i knew it would be amazing, but i didn’t expect it to be so unlike anything i’ve seen. genuinely shocks me how good the animation and story is for the spider verse movies…

9.2/10

i watched this on christmas eve, pretty late in the night. i wasn’t expecting anything new or amazing, but i hoped for something at least fun and had good christmas spirits. instead, i got just an absolute gem. surpassed all my expectations, i loved every minute of this. the holdovers for me was such a nostalgic movie, it had such a unique and oldened look to it which i loved. not to mention that the story was great and the settings and characters reminded me of something like dead poets. the biggest takeaway were the 3 mains, dominic sessa, d. joy-randolph and ofc paul giammati. such a wonderful watch ☺️

8.9/10

i have to say, that script is genuinely top tier and some of the best writing i’ve seen in the last few years for sure. when i was watching it, i realized that even though this movie is benefiting off of doing a lack of visual imagery, flashy cinematography and shots, as well as a lack of music… it could’ve benefited more off with a mesmerizing score and beautiful cinematography; a different moviemaking style, as much as i liked it already. it could’ve genuinely been one of the best movies of the decade with a different style. that being said, very great movie, this should win best original screenplay if holdovers doesn’t!

acting was brilliant, all around fantastic… including the dog omg

8.8/10

truly devastating… everyone acted great, everyone did their part, but zac efron simply was near perfect as kevin von erich.

by far the saddest movie of the year, and by far the greatest performance by efron in his career. theres not much negative to say about the iron claw other than the first 45 mins were slow, but i let them cook and they cooked alright.

8.8/10

past lives was a very good watch. it was a mature and subtle look at love, and one of the freshest and original i’ve seen as of late. the best bits of the movie added a lot to a very realistic and laid back screenplay. i think the mixing of languages was a fantastic addition, along with great symbolism and very well done camera shots, being huge highlights. personally, i think the best part of the movie was greta lee’s performance, which was amazing to watch.

8.7/10

probably the most entertaining watch and “feel good” watch of the year. this movie screams charisma, especially matt damon and jason bateman. ben affleck was also great but i more than ever loved his work behind the camera. i watched this one 2x and loved it even more on second watch. the movie does such a flawless job of conveying such a simple story with very good writing and great use of tone, and phenomenal pacing. i definitely enjoyed this more than others but idc it was a banger.

8.6/10

biggest delight and surprise of the year by far. there’s a really great and tragic story to unpack in this movie, and the use of godzilla as this allegory and also as a pure villian was very smart and fresh. cgi was 90% fantastic for a 15m dollar budget and i think the choice of having the human characters actually have a real impact and a real story to the overall movie was the best possible decision. really good work from everyone all around.

8.4/10

one of the best recent horror films i’ve seen w/o a shadow of a doubt. the philipou brothers genuinely crafted such a brilliant movie and definitely surprised me. the pacing was very well done, which is one of the biggest complaints i have with horror movies. this one just felt so much different, as if it completely changed the game for what horror can be if done right.

8.4/10

kicking off the top 10, this was really an overwhelming experience in the theatres. i already expected something great because it’s scorsese, and that’s exactly what i got. a really mature and gritty movie showing the systematic hardships and evil lurking in the states, i think the film perfectly depicts the story it was trying to tell, maybe a bit too good- the movie sadly suffers from being too damn long. 3h30m is only justifiable if the tacked on minutes were worth it and i would say it wasn’t. if the film were to be just under 3 hours, it’d be one of my favourites from the year.

i liked the fact that leo plays a guy who is conflicted and also who is easily manipulated instead of a hero character. de niro is great per usual, leo is great, everyone else was great, but lily gladstone gave the best performance. such a reserved yet powerful performance done to almost perfection. i loved the camera work used in the film, and it looked really great on the big screen. one of my favourite scenes are the use of the owls symbolizing the afterlife, i thought things like that were such great additions to the film.

overall great work from scorsese with a very interesting screenplay, but it’s just barely under a 4.5/5 @ an 8.4/10.

(my thoughts may change with a rewatch)

8.4/10

great great mcu addition. the story here was most definitely worth telling and was a great top off on the trilogy. so many things to love from this, and not much to dislike. i really need to rewatch this one because im only reviewing based on memory. but the one thing i really do remember being fantastic was the storyline of rocket and how deeply sad it all was. this film was a real tearjerker, need to rewatch asap!

8.3/10

really good stuff all around; great satire, great drama, great acting, and the best part… it was very orginal.

8.3/10

the killer was a great movie, i think everyone was expecting an epic assassin thriller movie in the most fincher style possible, but this was completely different. instead, it was almost a comedy? it wasn’t about a cold blooded killer who is the best at what he does, it’s about a calm collected human character that makes mistakes and isn’t the best at his job. it was very much a satire look at the genre, while also serving as a good film in its respects of action and thrills. Great action choreography, solid cinematography, and of course a very likeable performance by michael fassbender, who sells this character perfectly.

overall, a very cool , very subtle and simple film. definitely not finchers best work, but for the scale it was set out to be, it was a great effort.

8.3/10

unlike other people, i think beau is afraid is a great movie. just by its sheer ambition and really odd and crazy direction, it gets praise from me, but i thought it was super creative, weird asf in the best ways, messy in the best ways snd crazy in the best ways. It all felt like a fever dream and a confusing one at that. i had a blast with this one and im hoping to rewatch soon.

8.2/10

Wonka was genuinely a pleasant delight, probably one of the best “feel good” movies of the year or last couple years tbh. Chalamet was absolutely amazing and he was so charismatic. i usually really dislike musical bits, but i didn’t mind the ones in Wonka. the supporting cast was mostly great, really no big complaints, just that Wonka isn’t the type of movie i would watch, and the fact that it was great really made me happy.

8.2/10

nothing special when it came to story telling, but tom cruise elevated his game once again with this entry. a great set of action set pieces, some of my favourite of the year besides jw4 and an original plot line of AI that i think was a fresh decision made by everyone working on the film. I’d take fallout over this any day, but i still really enjoyed this summer blockbuster.

8/10

i’ll simply put jw4 this way

action: greatest in the last decade

writing/dialogue: not great

if the writing wasn’t made the last priority, this movie easily would’ve been top 5 for me.

7.8/10

soooooo weird, i thought id hate this, but ended up enjoying it quite a lot. great performances in the weirdest ways possible. movie looks great, written with a ton of quirks and a surprisingly decent score. behind this madness is a moving story about self identity which is always nice to see… andddd this is the most sex ive seen in a movie in the last few years. emma stone i didnt know you were okay with this

7.6/10

just had a great time with this one. super fun and entertaining, short and sweet, nothing really negative to say other than it felt generic at times.

7.5/10

i thought id enjoy creed 3 more than i really did. i found myself not enjoying the writing in this film and i thought michael b jordan’s acting wasn’t on par to the prior 2. the movie had a definite pacing problem as well, scenes would go by way too fast, and my biggest gripe is the final fight, which was filmed and choreographed absolutely fantastically, but that still didn’t stop it from still feeling rushed?? idk if it was just me but the fact they skipped a lot of rounds in the dream-like sequence kinda made me feel weird about it. other than that, that final fight for what it was, was definitely one of the greatest boxing matches i’ve ever seen put to film. michael b jordan’s talent behind the camera is remarkable, and i do think he has a great future in directing.

the movie had a good plot, good emotional depth, and offered a lot to the franchise. the highlight for me was Jonathan majors’ Damian Anderson, which is a top 3 rocky villain w/o a doubt and one of my favourite antagonists from this year.

7.5/10

funny, original, thought-provoking and this years best satire film. they cloned tyrone is definitely the biggest underdog from this year.

impossible to rank, so i’ll just put it as the highest of the 3.5’s from this year.

7.4/10

where do i start with this one?

i saw this one 2x, one in theatres, one at home. i think seeing this movie twice made me appreciate the heart of the film and the story way more than i would’ve on a single watch.

yes, the cgi was horrible, yes there were some horrible scenes, some probably the worst the year has seen, but at the same time, here’s a film telling a unique story and taking the basics of flashpoint and putting it to the big screen. i think there’s a version of this movie that would’ve been absolutely incredible, but we got the pretty good version instead. Some of the strongest character development was in this movie in ezra miller’s barry allen, which i thought he was great in this. along with this was a great ensemble around him, with keetons batman and sasha’s great supergirl. there was a lot to love from this messy behind the scenes drama disaster.

7.4/10

yeah obviously super provocative and going for a major shock factor, but to be honest i think the shocking moments the movie had made the whole movie better in the end. Top to bottom great acting, a super fucked up screenplay, but also a very smart one. The main takeaway for me was the cinematography matched with brilliant editing and a really fitting score. It isn't a bad film, by any means, but I could see why saltburn wouldn't work for many people. (Barry Keoghan will be a great joker).

7.4/10

just another solid entry in wes andersons filmography. really loved the color grading and the shots in this one. of course a star studded cast being great. i especially loved scarjo in this role our of everyone.

i think the story it was trying to tell was very new and i did really like the fact that it was a play within a movie. unfortunately, i found myself putting asteroid city down in the rankings as i went on through the year. mainly because i felt like there were a lot of non sensical and slow parts of the movie that didn’t contribute to the story at all. overall good movie would watch again!

7.4/10

yes, i do agree with most people when they say this movie has really nothing to say. except, i think it has a lot to say about family and riches.

first of all, the cinematography is one of the best the year has seen, this movie genuinely looks beautiful. along with this is the colored and b&w scenes, which i felt were a great addition, but had no real meaning? and i don’t know or care what anyone else says, this is a top 10 screenplay of the year, bradley cooper directed, acted and wrote the shit out of this movie and i think that is awesome. i think the main highlight other than bradley is definitely carrey mulligan, absolutely brilliant performance and i do believe she should win the oscar for best actress. i do have complicated feelings about the actual story itself and the pacing, which i thought was poor.

7.3/10

intriguing watch to say the least. cast was phenomenal, mood and tone was done very well, i don’t really know how to describe how i felt after the film was done. i wasn’t amazed at what i watched whatsoever but id say i was definitely impressed.

7.2/10

even thought i’m not the target audience, i thought barbie was a lot of fun, although cringe at certain times, it’s very self aware and because of that, the movies thrived. everyone was great!

7/10

wish washy writing is the first thing i really took away from this movie. at times, it’s really well written with an amazing cast doing their very best with acting it out, and at other times, the writing is generic, oddly placed and not very good. but for the most part, i was hooked at an intriguing “world ending” story. i very much understood the symbolism and message the movie was trying to tell which made me like it a lot more.

the best thing about this film is the camera work and cinematography, genuinely some of the best shots all year

i don’t know about that ending though.. whatever

6.8/10

unique, odd, so many words to describe this movie. willam dafoe is amazing per usual and really is the entire movie. it was pretty cool to see dafoe go slowly insane for 2 hours straight. definitely some plot holes and a few silly things about it, but in the end, it didn’t matter a whole lot.

6.4/10

this is an interesting one to talk about. i think spaeny and elordi are really good and had some pretty good dialogue to work with but the movie as a whole really feels like it’s just compiling random moments from priscilla’s life and doesn’t have a unique or interesting narrative. instead it just tells this very bare bones love story from priscilla’s pov, which imo is a detriment to the film entirely. maybe that’s what sofia was going for but it didn’t work for me a whole lot.

6.3/10

one of the best action movies from this year. that one shot prison scene was phenomenal work. unfortunately the actual story of the film was genuinely one of the most boring and bland from this year.

6.2/10

very great concept on paper, but was it excecuted well? uhhhh not really

but i’d say there were some solid parts of the film, it just never explored the ideas to its full potential.

6/10

very intriguing story, with some original ideas, some great acting as well, but like many other not amazing movies, it had really nothing new to offer to the table especially for a modern war film. i think what set this one back is the lack of depth it explored in its writing (not a great script at all) still, i’d say the pros outweigh the cons. Jake was great per usual and so was everyone else.

4.9/10

just uninspired dog shit from top to bottom. paul rudd and jonathan majors made it watchable (kang is a great villian)

4.2/10

they cooked up a whole lotta nothing …

i’m not quite sure what they were trying to do with this movie but it didn’t work for me and a lot of other people. As a fan of the games this was a huge letdown. It delivered almost nothing from what made the games so good. the cast was decent however, and there are some good moments, good cinematography, animatronics looked amazing… and that’s about it.

3.7/10

fun at times with chris evans and ana de armas, some funny moments especially the cameo scene … but at the same time the movie had absolutely nothing to offer, some horrible generic writing, mediocre acting, uninspired story, not very funny… what did we expect.
