Moon Knight
My first rewatch since it first came out. It’s still good but the potential of moon knight and his story is genuinely comic book perfection. He has been my favourite character of all fiction for my whole life for a reason. The route they decided to go for this particular story works decently well for a 6 episode miniseries (would’ve been better the longer it was). I still have my problems with the way everything was executed in terms of the MANY changes they made, the MCU-fication, and the overall quality, but for what this miniseries was, i liked it a lot. Here are my very quick and spontaneous thoughts:
Moon Knight is not a character that garners a PG-13 rating. He should have absolutely been in the same ranks as how they have been treating daredevil. What a fucking missed opportunity from marvel my goodness. I still cannot stand the lighthearted nature of the first 3 episodes as it tried to balance maturity with a secondary tone and dealing with a sensative topic like DID. However, the shows main strong point is how well they explored DID and intertwined it within the story masterfully. And to think it could’ve been explored with even more maturity had they gone through with a TV-MA/R rating is a travesty.
As for moon knights arc, it’s good but not great. The concept of Konshu being a manipulative master and using Marc basically against his will makes for an extremely intriguing basis. The only problem with this is that because of the unwilling nature of Marc to be moon knight, ESPECIALLY having this story happen in the later years of Marc’s time as moon knight, we get less action and less time with Oscar Isaac dawning the suit (which is honestly the greatest costume in the MCU and slightly moggs the comic version). I understand why the chose to go this way, and yes it totally works for the story, even more so because of the presence of Steven. That is the biggest deviation from the comics and what moon knight represented. I think another huge part of deviating into the MCU version of this character was to avoid comparisons to Batman. In the comics, Steven Grant was a fancy business man akin to Bruce Wayne, not a timid and innocent British guy. I wish we got a story that dealt with THIS VERSION of Steven and created a more nuanced difference to Marc, rather than a blatant personality difference as we see in the show. Still, for what it’s worth, their journey of learning to coexist together was done super well and I ended up loving Steven.
Had it been different (or if we see a solo moon knight project again), we need to see Bushman. Undoubtedly moon knights most infamous villian. They mentioned him in the show, but it doesn’t even come close to doing Bushman justice for the power he serves for a potential story. This comes to another problem I have with this show. They tried to weave in his whole character arc into a 300 minute runtime. Big mistake. Like yes, it was amazing to see Marc being saved by Konshu and become moon knight for the first time, but the amount of potential that singularly has is beyond me.
The show ends with their 3rd personality, Jake Lockley, coming to light; a violent and ferocious psycho (just like the comics). Im glad they ended the show giving us a glimmer of hope that we could see moon knight again, as well as insinuate that we could see a moon knight that actually is active considering Marc and Steven cut ties with Konshu when they stopped their pact in the finale. So for the love of god, make a season two where we can actually explore MOON KNIGHT as a hero/anti-hero rather than focus on Marc and Steven. Of course, they cannot ignore what makes their whole dynamic special, which is the DID and their psychological problems, but what pains me is that there was a catharsis in Marc and Steven coexisting. I guess the next mental challenge would be dealing with the 3rd personality. Fine. I just want to see Moon Knight again, specifically on the big screen and MAYBE in a movie with a team (cough cough MIDNIGHT SONS FFS). Finally bring Blade in the MCU, throw in Ghost Rider and some other worthy character and I’m genuinely game. If Moon Knight is a “one and done” I am going to be heart broken.
Regardless, I’m so glad moon knight was brought to live action in 2022 and that they got Oscar Isaac to play him. Episode 5 was truly phenomenal and still reigns a top 5 MCU moment. When I first watched the show week by week back in March and April of 2022, I put aside my problems I had with it and ignored the changes they made to the character and heavily enjoyed it with some positive bias. Coming back to it now 4 years later, my problems with the show stick out like nobodies business. Despite that, there was still nothing like seeing the suit for the first time. I believe if marvel hired some better creatives onto the show and spent more time with the craft, this could have been the greatest comic book show of all time. I have sincere hope that Oscar Isaac can play moon knight again and bring something fresh to the table.
