god that credit scene just hits hard doesn’t it

just a super fun time with stupid cgi

i’m not sure if this over the top satirical depiction of the general public’s reliance on technology for me. because of the state of the world is in and the ever changing internet, there’s an obvious rise in movies on the subject of AI and technology and how dangerous it could be for us as a society. But i think there’s a fine line to walk between it coming off as corny and too direct and actually working to make a meaningful commentary. there are some things that work overwhelmingly so. susan’s story is perfect to show the way AI chat bots purposefully prey on vulnerable people and make them dependent on it (as well as showing the flippant way people speak of school shootings because the problem has gotten so out of hand and nobody cares enough to fix it). therapy ads, the military propaganda. actually, i’d love to see a whole movie about her. Just perfect. Mark’s story on the other hand wasn’t working so well at all. ingrid’s had the same themes as susan but wasn’t very strong. the main plot with the time traveler was so fucking boring by the time i had 30 minutes left of the movie i didn’t even want to finish it.

i knew it would be awful but i went in with an open heart and mind. i was not surprised to find that i was right. well actually, it was worse than i expected. it’s very rarely that a movie adaptation will do its video game original source justice. this is no exception. return to silent hill felt like a film that wanted to be a video game so badly. maybe it was an attempt at being faithful to the game? maybe they got lazy and went crazy with the cgi. it genuinely looked like ps5 graphics with video game mechanics to support it. the lighting, the way everyone moved, the camera angles. even the constant flashbacks every time james entered a new location. it’s just ridiculous. if i wanted it to feel like a video game i would go play it myself or watch a damn Let’s Play video. games and movies are completely different mediums so i understand the disconnect and difficulty that comes with adapting a game into a film but this is probably the worst i’ve ever seen. it doesn’t even try to entertain me it just throws cgi at me and hopes im distracted by shapes and colors. silent hill as a game franchise is a beautifully crafted psychological and atmospheric horror and this movie has stripped it of everything that made it so lovable. i think we as a society have moved past the need for silent hill movie adaptations. the games are perfect as they are.
