Backrooms
Genuinely at a loss for words……(Minor Spoilers)
This is an extremely metaphorical and “lore” based film. I hate to be one of those guys but the movie at surface level is NOT the same when you understand everything.
I came out the movie feeling pretty positive about the film (maybe around 3.5/5 or 4/5) but after researching a few confusions I had, I was blown away even more. I would really wanna watch it again, because I wanna watch it with the perspective of the knowledge I have now. I’d also DEFINITELY recommend watching Kane Parson’s YouTube Series before going in order to be a little prepared.
I see people complaining about the movie being too character oriented. But that’s the point of the movie. The Backrooms is just the subconscious aspect of the modern world. The rift opening in Clark’s basement is the point.
Everything in the vicinity of what Clark explored was a replication of Clark’s world and the twisted personality he has. The furniture, the layouts even “Pirate Clark” (his alter ego or should I say the replication of Clark in the Backrooms). Everything is about Clark BECAUSE the rift opened in his basement. The cherry on top is that Clark is just a test subject for Async. That might not play in their favour.
With Mary, and the way the movie ends is the “tragic irony” of the movie. From being trapped since childhood, to being trapped in Adulthood despite “using” her past to escape death.
I was a little annoyed in the middle with the conversation between Clark and Mary inside the Backrooms because it felt like the movie steered off the topic of the Backrooms itself but more so on the characters self personas or psychology. But I was completely wrong. That scene is soooo important and powerful. That is what symbolizes what the Backrooms really is, but it might have steered in a little too deep to the specifics of Clark’s personal life to take your focus off the real symbolism.
Both these characters were used to explain the two types of beings in the backrooms. Monsters or Still-Life’s. They set the Premise of the Backrooms universe.
One thing I was a little annoyed about, was seeing Pirate Clark’s face. I wanted it to be ominous, but I get why. It’s just a personal preference but it was the right move.
The movie being based “during” the YouTube series is the Biggest point. Async’s research had started. But the Movie’s events are simultaneous. The “testing” of “Pirate Clark” is the reason for future encounters with the “Bacteria” which technically lead to the other “found footage” episodes on YouTube.
The Backrooms is just a seperate dimension seperate from space and time. But the concept of the Backrooms itself comes from the strange feeling of the human mind that: 1. We remember things vaguely, not exact details. Details get disoriented. 2. That there’s a sense of feeling of the human mind that “I’ve been here before” even though you haven’t. Because the Backrooms creates a perception of memories of your subconscious mind.
The Backrooms just being/behaving like a Big “MRI” Machine theory is also so amazing. It really just makes perfect sense. Whatever nearby area or whoever enters the Backrooms, the Backrooms replicates an image of them and their psyche like an MRI machine does for humans and their brains. What’s amazing is Async specifically only used to make MRI machines before 🤔
Not only that, but whoever goes into the backrooms. A part of them or “the way the “backrooms” remembers them” gets left behind. Either a Monster or Still-Life.
Kane Parsons absolutely blew my mind away. A 20 year old guy just created a masterpiece. I don’t care what anyone says. If you didn’t like it or weren’t blown away from it, you simply DID NOT understand it. This movie is not meant to be enjoyed on a surface level like Obsession, which was filled with thrills and exciting moments. This is a movie you enjoy because you understand the depth of each scene AND the scary/suspense scenes we DO get throughout the film. Despite all that, my theatre crowd clapped after the movie ended. Been a while since I’ve seen that.
I CANT WAIT FOR FUTURE BACKROOMS MOVIES. THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING.
