Hollywood
Do you ever watch something that you know you’ll hate? That you know you’ll end up watching in a constant state of annoyance? I did when I first started this show. They sort of got me with the first episode which I thought was alright. I really love David Corenswet and many of the other actors working here.
But this is such disingenuous idiocy. Not only does it erase the work of the actual black, LGBTQ, mixed race people that suffered and sacrificed themselves to make great art at that time but it also blatantly slaps on a “follow your dreams and be seen is easy, you only have to stand up for yourself” message — one great for Pinterest girlies and people who get their notions of righteous morality from Instagram posts. AND THE WAY IT TREATS REAL LIFE PEOPLE — Rock Hudson was not a bumbling idiot! That final episode with the Oscars, was just… ugh… Adding to this: awfully researched the whole way through.
Well… besides the actors… good photography… even if they don’t have the know-how to do proper black and white 1940s cinematography and refuse to do Academy ratio for more than a minute in fear Netflix viewers will find it boring looking. The pacing and editing can also be atrocious at times. Character relations are not properly explored… I’m thinking too hard about this. And I shouldn’t. Because the folks behind it surely didn’t think a fuck about it either.
(P.s. the lack of transatlantic speak and using the term pictures more often bugged me like hell)
