First off I have never had a film make me feel so many things at once, from happy cause of Stevie’s friendships with Ray and Fuckshit to angry at how he’d be treated at home and how his brother would neglect him and every emotion in between, and when a film makes you feel that rollercoaster full of real emotions, it’s an amazing movie. Something that fascinated me about this movie is how it was willing to take risks to feel more real and to convey its message further. It wasn’t afraid to make really controversial scenes for a thicker plot, such as having a literal love scene between a kid and full on adult, which made it feel authentic and showed how fucked up things like this can get. Jonah Hill at times made the most questionable choices but in the end it helped immerse myself into Stevie’s fucked up world and I felt like I was there when everything was happening. I was able to easily put myself in Stevie’s shoes because not only have I witnessed things like this happen in my own life, but the movie does really well at showing exactly what he’s feeling with every scene. It shows everything going on around him, every dialogue, every interaction. That scene in which he had an emotionally vulnerable conversation with Ray was one of my favorite scenes specifically because of that. Because they were able to relate to each other, they became closer and it furthered their friendship which was vital to the story. Overall I feel like all of these qualities made the movie, although a difficult watch at times because of how emotional it is, a perfect film and I know many don’t agree but this to me is an example of how beautiful, dark and real a movie can feel.
