Moonlight
I first saw Moonlight in my film studies class, senior year of highschool.
I was really starting to understand how to read a film and fully ingest the intentions of the filmmaker.
I saw so many incredible films in this class, Thank you Mr Reiff!
This was the first film we watched after starting online teaching. Covid made it impossible for us to meet in class and discuss the film.
When i watched it, alone in my room, i loved it! So many scenes broke me down and made me cry (i was glad i was home alone) however the ending didn’t really click with me.
It felt unfinished, i wanted the story to get all wrapped up in a bow.
Since than i’ve seen many more incredible films and Moonlight has never left my brain.
Every time i see a beautiful, heartbreaking film, i think back to Moonlight.
I now understand the ending is perfect, the film is perfect.
I wish i was still in that class, i bet Mr Reiff would’ve loved to hear this epiphany.
He never argued with me about the ending being unsatisfying, he just accepted my opinion and told me one day i should try again.
I tried again!
