I dont think any review I can write up for this movie in the next 10 years of my life can capture my thoughts and emotions of this movie.

"He will spend hundreds of years travelling the world; learning all there is to know. He will learn every language, he will read every book, he will know every land. he will spend thousands of years, creating stunning works of art. He will learn to meditate to control all pain." "great loves found, and lost, and found, lost, and found, and found, and found and memories built upon memories, until life runs on an endless loop."

Sometimes you might only need great dialogue. Was most definitely not prepared for that.I swear Liv Ullmann is like one of the best actors if not the best actor because my heart was thumping and shivers running down my spine watching her peformance. Honestly I felt like I was going to explode because the film kept punching me in the gut over and over again.Recently I have been pondering on how I will go around not passing childhood trauma if I ever have kids. Neglecting your child is the most heartbreaking thing a parent could ever do, being fearful to possibly cause it and imagining the pain it causes is masterfully embodied in Autumn Sonata. This movie truly embodies that feeling in such a emotionally powerful way. We see the two daughters become the byproduct of the mothers inability to become a proper and prevelant figure. I had my mouth wide opened during the last section of the film.Every expression, every line, every shot made was so purposefully made that its so hard to imagine the movies without those elements. "The mother's injuries are to be handed down to the daughter. The mother's failures are to be paid for by the daughter. The mother's unhappiness is to be the daughter's unhappiness. It's as if the umbilical cord had never been cut." This is completely different from Persona and they are equally both amazing in thier own ways which makes me so excited to see more of Ingmar Bergman's work.

It has been nearly 2 years since my first viewing of this film. This rewatch made me realise how much ive changed since then.It is so refreshing and beautiful to finally follow Theodore's footsteps and come face to face with my real emotions and finally accept them. "Dear Catherine, I've been sitting here thinking about all the things I wanted to apologize to you for. All the pain we caused each other. Everything I put on you. Everything I needed you to be or needed you to say. I'm sorry for that. I'll always love you 'cause we grew up together and you helped make me who I am. I just wanted you to know there will be a piece of you in me always, and I'm grateful for that. Whatever someone you become, and wherever you are in the world, I'm sending you love. You're my friend to the end. Love, Theodore."
