The Deer Hunter
The Deer Hunter is one of the most emotionally devastating war films I’ve seen. I really appreciated how it never shies away from the physical and psychological horrors of war, and the Russian roulette scenes are some of the most intense and unforgettable sequences I’ve ever watched.
It’s definitely a slow burn, but I’m so glad I stuck with it because the payoff is incredible. The first hour builds a sense of warmth, friendship, and normalcy, the second tears it all apart, and the final act is left to deal with the emptiness that’s left behind. Instead of being brought together by celebration, these friends are reunited through grief. It’s tragic, deeply human, and near flawless.
