Serial Experiments Lain

Present day Present time Serial experiments Lain is a dystopian psychological horror from 1998 made during the growing fears of the upcoming millennia. As each passing time i watch the show, it feels like I interpret differently depending on what is happening around me. When i first saw the show i came to the conclusion that it was about subjective truth, religion and misinformation leading to extremism. Ironically started watching it a week before a certain nightclub incident that happened in florida, which freaked me out if you know what happens in episode 2. While this is an issue lain tackles i felt like i was missing the bigger picture. Second time i watched it during a very confusing time in my life and I saw it as an allegory for depression and identity. I wasn’t sure who i was or what the future held for me and was very scared of what is happening in both the world and with myself. At times it can feel like the ramblings of a mad man, which makes sense because of the recent troubles with Konaka, but that would a bit dismissive. Lain in way will mean something different depending on the present day and present time. This most recent viewing felt like a weird combination of all of the above. I think i need to make a documentary or something i don’t know.
