Speed Racer
I watched this when I was a kid, but I think it was time I rewatched and logged it. I love the aesthetic of the wonky CGI. It’s intentional, and I love it. I mean, from the opening sequence weaving in and out of the present and past, just like cars on the track, it’s amazing. The transitions and cuts work so well to create this real, almost psychedelic visual style.
Also, not to mention the costume designs are beautiful, specifically the one to one translation of Speed’s 1960s anime design. Meanwhile, they redesigned Racer X’s design to perfection. I prefer it to the manga 100%.
All this and I haven’t even mentioned any of the acting, which there is plenty of. I’m actually a big fan of Emile Hirsch, and that scene in the beginning where he’s racing his brother’s record and purposely slows down to let his brother live on really gets me, especially when that single tear rolls down. It’s really beautiful.
But my favorite scene hands down has to be when Pops and Speed have that talk. I also love how it showcases how Pops has really learned and grown from what happened with Rex and how he dealt with it. It’s extremely touching to see the vulnerability and pride of a father, and the understanding that his boy has become a man.
This movie was so ahead of its time it makes my head spin. It will always break my heart that it never got a sequel, but maybe perfection shouldn’t be tampered with.
