Sunset Boulevard
“I am big. It’s the pictures that got small.”
From the moment Gloria Swanson appears on screen, Sunset Boulevard grips you with a sense of unease. Her portrayal of Norma Desmond is haunting blend of grandeur, fragility, and madness. Under Billy Wilder’s masterful direction, the film transcends its era, cementing its place as one of cinema’s most enduring masterpieces.
In terms of the story, I believe Norma kills Joe not out of love or desperation, but out of her relentless hunger for fame. She cannot accept a world in which she is no longer in the spotlight. Joe, even in death, seems to worry about what people will say about his killer, showing an almost pitying understanding of her. Yet, in the end, Norma used him—nothing more than a means to step once again into the glare of the cameras, to reclaim the stardom she once had… and perhaps, in her mind, never truly lost.
“No one ever leaves a star. That’s what makes one a star.”
