Shrek
I don't care what anyone says, Shrek is a masterpiece. Not a guilty pleasure, not a "fun for a kids' movie". A legitimately iconic, genre-defying, emotionally rich, culturally essential work of art. I love it.
It's absolutely hilarious. It has a razor sharp comedy – not cheap slapstick, but clever, perfectly timed, well, often absurd, but somehow still relatable.
The way it pokes fun at every Disney trope while still managing to be a better fairy tale than any of the ones it's mocking? Absolute cinema!
But beneath the chaos, Shrek has so much heart.
This move captures his insecurity really well. His character development shaped in learning to let his guard down and let people in. Realizing that the walls he build to protect himself might also be keeping him from love. He found someone who sees his flaws and stays anyway.
The soundtrack is FLAWLESS. All Star, Hallelujah, I'm a Believer – Every song was chosen and hits like an emotional gut punch wrapped in glitter.
Fiona turning into ogre and finally being happy about it? That was my feminist awakening.
I quote this movie weekly. Maybe daily.
