Frankenstein
This adaptation is faithful to the original book and its themes, while exploring new aspects and changing some characters.
It made me feel sympathetic for the creature, rather than always villainising it, like in other versions and retellings. I also liked how Victor was the one to kill Elizabeth not the creature, I thought it was more moving that way. Her relationship with the creature was very different as well, and she was a much more independent woman, which I throughly enjoyed. Also I liked that they made Elizabeth Victor’s sister in law rather than his fiancé, which I didn’t originally think was necessary. Though it is important to recognise that I think the film downplays Shelley’s social critique, especially about the patriarchy, but you can’t get everything into a film.
I also found the abuse of young victor and the death of his mother very impactful, and a haunting parallel between the creature and young Victor’s lives.
Also, they didn’t really touch as much on people being physically repulsed by the creature, including Victor. That was the thing I wanted more of.
I think it should win best adapted screenplay, as I think this is a monster (pun intended) of a film to adapt.
But I really enjoyed it, even though I was scared.
RIP to the wolves though and that random deer, made me sad 😔
