Heat
“You don’t live with me , you live among the remains of dead people .”
Heat had my heart sprinting the entire runtime. The first 40 minutes feel a little slow, but once it clicks, it clicks like a detonator. Alfred Hitchcock said a thriller is when a bomb is under the table and the audience knows it while the characters don’t, and Heat takes that idea and mutates it: the detective knows De Niro’s plan, De Niro knows the detective’s plan, the detective knows De Niro knows his plan, and De Niro knows the detective knows he knows it, and somehow we still have no idea what’s going to happen. The tension is unbearable, the tempo is relentless, and the ending is pure genius. The stakes climb so high they start stealing oxygen, and I loved every second of it.
