I absolutely loved Obsession! It was one of those movies that had me locked in the entire time, and it genuinely scared me in a way that few horror movies do! What makes it even more impressive is that it is the directorial debut of Curry Baker who is someone I first knew from Tik Tok. Seeing him go from making short-form content to directing such a great horror movie was really cool! I also really liked seeing fresh faces in the cast, especially Inde Navarrette, who gave such an amazing performance. One of my favorite things about this movie is how many small details were woven throughout the story. There were so many subtle moments and character choices that made the movie more interesting the more I thought about it afterwards. It felt really carefully crafted instead of replying on cheap scares, which is something that I really look for in a horror movie. Beyond being a great horror movie, I thought it had a really strong message about toxic masculinity and the entitlement some men feel toward women. What I found especially interesting was how Bear seemed to lose interest in the situation when he realized he couldn’t fully control Nikki. It wasn’t about love or connection but about possession. The moment she began acting outside of the role he wanted her to play, his obsession shifted into frustration and fear. I also don’t think he ever truly liked her as a person. Instead, he fell in love with an idealized version of her that he created in his own head. Because of that, she was never allowed to be a real person with her own flaws and wants. The moment she stopped fitting into that fantasy, his feelings began to change. Overall, such an amazing horror movie with a great message!
