I could see the tropes from 1000000 miles away. Still, really enjoyable seeing it all work together.

Nothing interesting or standout. I’m sure this is great to someone in the sport world, but I’m a film major not a football player goddammit!

Surely I’m missing something here, right? I think Haneke is a great director and his craft is undeniable even in my least favorite projects of his. The Seventh Continent is one of those. My feelings for this film extend itself to 71 Fragments of a Chronology of Chance as well. Both amount to very little while trying to say a lot. They fail to find a balance between a functional narrative style and a thought provoking one. There is much to like in this one, more than 71 Fragments, but that makes it all the more frustrating that it falls short on such a great premise. The ending is proof of great direction that lurks throughout the film. I’m a bit shocked to find that my favorite of this trilogy is Benny’s Video, considering it’s the one with the lowest rating. It succeeds at having a structurally sound narrative. Admittedly, it’s the least unique in that sense, but it’s what I feel is necessary for Haneke’s strengths to stand out. It deserves a rewatch for sure.

This guy made The Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
