a VERY long, reflective and personal review incoming: first and foremost, i want to make it clear that my moms favourite movie of all time is *the devil wears prada*, and i can only count the amount of references my older brother has made over the years and the times theyve both made me rewatch it. so, i too, couldnt help to fall for the nostalgia bait over something i quite literally grew up with, as much as i didnt expect to. you could only imagine how excited my family was to watch it, even preparing their outfits weeks before its release on my parents anniversary (and pushing me to dress like andy). but i didnt expect to enjoy it as much as i did. what i appreciate is how much it hits harder now because the first movie came out at a time when digital technology was only just starting to emerge, whereas this one feels much more aware of how far things have come. theres a clear critique of the industrys obsession with staying relevant, this constant fear of becoming obsolete and the pressure to adapt to something thats always changing faster than you can keep up with. theres something almost sad about that, especially when you think about characters who built their entire identity competing their way to the top. because what happens when the world they worked so hard for starts to turn into something they dont fully understand anymore? its something that is so important to reflect on today. i also really appreciated how intentional the references to the first film were. some of them are obvious, but others are so small and specific that you only catch them if youve really lived with the original (and if you have a fashion mom who is obsessed and says every little fact about this movie and talks about every single piece they rewore). it made the whole experience feel more personal because the film trusts you to remember. and i thought the cameos were done well. there are the obvious appearances but also so many subtler ones like designers, stylists, people from within the fashion world help make the story feel more authentic. truly iconic. my mom is a diehard fan if you cant tell. also laufey and the marias in a movie🥹
