Before Sunrise
A feat in dialogue-writing.
It's hilarious that every time we cut to Julie or Ethan it's just boom! Face card. Boom! Face card. Boom! Face card.
I couldn't help but smile almost 50% of the time while watching this. I genuinely love, love, love movies where people just talk—Aftersun, Manchester by the Sea, Marcel the Shell with Shoes on, and now this. I'm glad I watched this now and not during 2018 otherwise I'd be too young to appreciate something like this. What a charming and delightful start of a relationship through genuine connection in the span of literally half a day, executed masterfully in the medium of film. Such a simple yet beautifully done concept that will be nigh-impossible to replicate to the same degree.
I really love that Céline caught Jessie's mannerism of using "you know" as filler words. Ethan Hawke does that in real life too, and I like to think she caught it during filming and the two implemented it into their characters. These two had the best chemistry I've seen on film yet. I'm excited to watch the last two in this trilogy. I really love that this film basically told me that I barely had a conversation as amazing as this. To be fair, I don't go much around meeting French women or American guys like Céline and Jessie.
Loved it.
