Submarine
Alex Turner was the main reason why I watched this. It was during the pandemic, I subscribed to Spotify, I had an Arctic Monkeys phase, I was in love with the vocalist (still am), I stumbled upon Alex Turner's solo album, and it turned out to be for a movie.
Those series of decisions that stumbled over one another was possibly the best thing that could happen to me during a dire time. The world was in disarray. I was rotting in my room. I listened to Submarine's original soundtrack. I watched the movie. I may have resonated with Oliver Tate a little bit.
I remember that I absolutely sucked at naming my Spotify playlists four years ago, and I labeled them using singular words, one was foolishly "Despondency" — I laughed at the coincidence. I couldn't count the movies I wallowed in, the pages of mindless narratives I've written, the hyper-specific playlists I've made for hormonal moods, the number of fantasies and daydreams, nor the books I've basked in; all of these just to pass time.
This is already an essay at this point, but does it really matter? I loved the film.
