Beats
This movie is about two outcast best friends. One is a loser (Johnno) who lacks self confidence with a cop as a stepdad, the other (Spanner) is a joyous ratbag living with his older brother. I’ll take time out to describe his older brother, who is one of those terrifically vile, loud brits who have unchecked and uncalled for violence surging through their veins. One of those men who are constantly on the edge and are about to snap that really put me on edge and feature so much in films from the UK that I semi joke about wanting to never go there. Hats off to Neil Leiper who played him so brilliantly.
Anyway, these two friends love techno and the whole film centers around this rave Spanner really wants to go to and has to plead his best mate Johnno to come to, as parties are now illegal in the United Kingdom.
Spoiler alert: they go to the rave.
The rave scene is so overwhelming beautiful and I won’t explain exactly why because there is a lot of magic when witnessing it for the first time, and the second, but they use a terrific technique which is simple and fun and should be experienced raw. Even if you haven’t been to a rave I’m sure you can feel the joy and fun seeping out of the screen. It is easily the best party scene I’ve ever seen.
The love these two boys have for eachother is so lovely to see and touched my heart.
Also the music in this movie is incredible.
