Get Out
My commentary:
- the beginning: black man gets…. i dunno
- the way the girl said “blackmun” as one word and not “black-man”
- asking to talk to rod like that and the words used
- getting out the car after hitting the deer in the countryside
- the incident with the officer & ID
- the BLACK groundskeeper
- the zoom out of the southern style house.. sus
- and the groundskeeper looking at chris going in like something gonna happen
- the way her dad describes deer was unsettling
- “atta boy”
- specific frames of the 1936 olympics
- specifically black mold
- BLACK maid this is adding up to ONLY BLACK SERVANTS???
- Black housekeeper gazes suspiciously at Chris
- Dad points out the black servants as to put his guard down
- Mentions obama 3rd vote as if he’s following a script
- …Hypnosis…?
- why is dad so convincing of the hypnosis.. it’s like they tryna take control of him
- shindig: purposeful archaic language
- black maids expression… jumps on ‘accident’ like she’s warning Chris
- that ‘Good’ from mom was very strong
- woah the way the maid was just standing there with a cake or something and mom closed the door so abruptly
- why does the brother say judo with such disgust and mention him being african in such discomfort
- wtf is going on with this brother…is it cuz he’s black…
- girl mentions all these things AND the cop; lowering guard if to make him more comfortable…?
- the door is open. bags open. is that lion a surveillance device?
- Maid really just jumps out on me
- housekeeper runs at him and away.. maid stares out the window looking at herself and leaves. what’s going on?
- Yeah the mom defo knew as soon as he got out of bed
- “sure” she feels his discomfort and vulnerability
- “heightened suggestibility” = controlled… maybe to do with those servants under her control. when mom does something, stuff happens
- she’s doing the hypnosis thing bruh wit her tea and speech
- his eyes are changing + flashback, emphasis on zooming in on the tea… maybe subliminally referencing indentured servants
- crying + he keeps moving- hypnotised
- dropped into an abyss involuntarily
- detached from himself: watching his own point of view from a screen he can’t reach
- was a nightmare scenario: he feels he can’t get past anything that’s happened
- he spots the maid again: but the camera flips on him and you can see a structure with rows of chairs in front of it… they sat in it before; almost reminiscent of a slave auction
- the maid spots him trying to photograph her and she disappears in a flash
- housekeeper humming a tune similar to a slave song… turns around and speaks perfect paced southern english.. practically RP
- mentions Rose: the gf- housekeeper definitely knows her, or even in a relationship with her before… foreshadowing
- he knows what happened in the nightmare; blurring realities
- “and mind my own business”, the way he says it; this almost is the boldest most direct warning to Chris you could give without explicit mention
- Chris is still so trusting of gf… the methods are working
- but Chris now knows the hypnosis happened for definite
- “..hm” she’s close to compromise but Chris can’t but the pieces together
- SNOWBUNNYMINDCONTROL
- “But I do know Tiger” the PoC he mentions lol
- Chris gets like objectified and stereotyped or something this is definitely reminiscent of a slave auction
- “… the pendulum has swung back” almost like this person misses the olden-day and is envious of america post civil rights movement
- “black is in fashion” if this isn’t an explicit reference to slavery
- the mom-maid dynamic is highlighted here again
- Chris is pointed out like a trophy or a trinket
- WOAH another black guy with that accent! is that III tattoo on his neck a representation of prison-bars -(slavery? control?)
- everyone knows Chris’s business 😭
- ‘Logan King’ white name
- another family were asking about him: is this a slave auction? the black people so powerless here
- back to this structure with the chairs again
- Chris storms upstairs, everyone is wearing black: all conversation is stopped once he’s faraway enough and everyone listens- they all stare up
- his phone is taken off charge. dead. he is practically helpless now.
- Rod knows there’s weird stuff going on: black generational trauma, he has an outside perspective and isn’t hypnotised by ‘love’
- Rod is so right bruh
- Maid knows- Rose told Mom- her power is emphasised remotely
- maid doesn’t even know AAVE (hypnosis)
- maid got triggered… starts to break down; she’s mentally in hypnosis but is physically telling something else
- he gets presented again to a predominantly white audience… is HE in hypnosis?
- Mr King comes back and describes… Chris’s photograph breaks him out of hypnosis and King tells him to GET OUT!!!!
- How is Chris not connecting this…????? King got hypnotised again?????
- King mentions God: could be a commentary on Christianity being forced into africans during colonisation and slavery.. leaving behind folk faith and voudou
- Is the dad listening to Chris’s conversation? at the auction house?… they all throw up bingo signs like they’re bidding for a slave
- “it felt like I knew him” : either childhood (spoke with AAVE accent) or generational memory can’t tell
- maybe Chris has connected it and wants to leave
- ok yeah they show a picture of him in the auction house are you crazy
- and the art dealer who comforted him got him.
- why do the brother and mom watch from afar?
- just realised gf took chris away on purpose damnn So she really racist like that
- Chris tells a story of his mom dying. Draws an exact parallel to them running over the deer.
- He doesn’t want to leave Rose because that’s all he has. She’s taking control of his unfortunate situation. I feel like she knows she’s won and smiles to indicate this.
- All the warning signs are showing up to him here. Mom once again shows that dominance with the expression.
- King is Andre Hayworth. CHRIS GOTTA LEAVE and the call is interrupted it’s wraps bro
- this duffel bag definitely means something
- Door is left open like he needs to see this on purpose. With a red box indicating urgency. Pictures of rose with another blackman. and woman. He surely knows now.
- She’s playing time bro
- They all up boutta bang him out bruh goddayum
- That damn motherly gaze. It’s so over for him
- In this frame what is the painting behind him? Marquis de Sade? Ben Franklin? George III? can’t tell but it should indicate something. (she still playing time btw)
- Religious rhetoric being spat out his mouth and she’s messing this up… “fire” “gods” White women gon trap you for real
- Yeah buddy it’s finished for you chris
- And damn he got hypnotised. Mission accomplished for the slave masters.
- Back into the abyss- he’s now mentally trapped. Watching himself go. Behind a screen.
- Rod just lost a real one 💔 just like Andre gone
- specifically like the sound design and cinematography in this scene. he’s trapped in that gosh darn chair. belts like it’s pre 1865.
- A Deer watches over him
- this Rowan Armitage turns slavery into a modern institution. this could reference and or critique the 13A: involuntary servitude is illegal except for when as a punishment (prison: where black men are disproportionately punished); he even says ‘you cannot stop the inevitable’- the constitution and the enforcement of power.
- this officer(s) isn’t taking a black man (Rod) & a black man kidnapped (Chris & Andre) seriously
- holy acting from rose
- atleast Rod ain’t thick
- Doomed to a life of ALIENABLE rights. he’s boutta be stuck in the abyss.
- “Black is in fashion” i was right
- so this guy is actually just jealous
- are we zooming in on cotton for a specific reason or…
- oh the tea got him
- portraits on the right side of the wall potentially slave masters or confederate figures
- OH i was not expecting that
- Neither that what the hell so he just gonna kill everyone in his damn house okay i see you
- We got black John Brown here but this ain’t bleeding kansas
- Mississippi was definitely ON PURPOSE literally an OUTSTANDING SLAVE STATE
- Rose has gotta be a sadist or something just staring at black men (Maybe it was Marquis de Sade)
- why did he leave Rose alive JUST LEAVE NOW MAN DONT DO IT
- oh my days
- they made the black housekeeper a slave catcher OH AND HE WOKE UP and kills rose (almost) and himself maybe he just didn’t wanna live that life anymore ngl fair tbh
- she tries to manipulate him again jesus the cheek on her like
- let me guess OH WAIT it’s rod KILL HER BRO WHAT AREYOU DOING THOSE CROCODILE TEARS GON GET YOU IN JAIL FOOL
- Maybe she does die idk
Finished
Conclusion:
A modernised institution where wealthy white individuals take control of black people by manipulating black consciousness
They want the perceived advantages of black genetics without black identity
Power is dangerous when it is hidden behind ‘good intention’
She was the gateway to his despair.
Get Out presents a reimagination of slavery where oppression is reframed as not just violence but psychological control and commodification. The film critiques both liberal and rightwing thought through its radical response to what was to be Chris’s indentured servitude.
Also amend the 13th Amendment.
I might change this to a 5* later.
