La Jetée
“Il se demande à longtemps s’il l’avait vraiment vu ou s’il avait créé ce moment de douceur pour étayer le moment de folie qui allait venir”
“Memory is a strange thing… we are so bound by time. By its order.” (Arrival 2016).
It’s 3am and there’s a storm brewing outside. I was drawn to watch this for some reason. A beautiful meta expression of film as imagery, time, memory and the twine between them. So much of what we know is malleable. Twinged tainted and sewn with emotion confusion fondness and fear. I wonder if the predetermined is a fantasy or a natural order on the cusp of being understood. I’m so sad and confused by the past and it haunts me. And it in it I am also the most comforted. It’s just nice to think in these ways sometimes. The ability to dwell and further to hope: it’s dangerous and yet it’s strong. I often find myself at the that very pier (La Jetée) of my mind reminiscing within its liminal nature. Always watching the past depart and waiting for the future to arrive. All the while I’m at the pier. At the now.
As a film La Jetée is simple, short and nonetheless historic. The opposing stream of consciousness against blinking still black and white images encapsulates these very themes with artistry. Experimenting with such emotional narrative in the lens of science fiction. It’s earnest and raw and exactly what I crave from the genre. To see it here in film so young was mesmerizing. A blueprint. Also I finally started watching Dark on Netflix which I always put off for some reason — and it’s themes are also so interconnected I found it quite coincidental I was drawn to watch this at the same time. Arrival of course being my favorite movie all time and being able to see such an influence straight from the past it’s a full circle experience and a feeling that pleased me. I will definitely watch 12 monkeys in the future at some point now. Please please watch this even if it’s boring or pretentious I think it’s foundational and even if u walk away not caring the film in of itself is so calm and dreamy you might find yourself come away with a new way of thinking about something.
