Unsane
“there is no path to happiness from here. for either of us”woah. breathtaking, raw and gruesome psychological horror. unsane is an unexpected, unrelenting masterpiece. i’d like to addresss the elephant in the room per se with this film and that is that it’s filmed entirely on iphone— yes some cinematic buffs might gape at this idea but i really do think soderbergh’s iphone phase is subversive for film and is reaching out into the seemingly endless boundries of the medium. that said the iphone’s quality just works so well with unsane’s plot it’s gritty, dark and the close up shots are that much more in your face and are oddly skewed totally elevating the sense of desperation and anxiety being represented so beautifuly by claire foy. AHH claire foy i love youuu! foy is such an amazing actor and i’ve been knew since the crown but she really outdoes herself here. her range is definitely explored here yet she remains still very beleieveable throughout. AND LETS TALK ABOUT THAT SCENE IN THE SOLITARY CONFINEMENT ROOM. that is why cinema exists ugh— the dialogue was so beautifully executed and heightened the pure terror of a concept the scene was. the whole movie is a spine chilling concept so beautifuly (and when i say beautifuly i mean grotesquely, in the best meaning of the word) contrived. unsane has done horror such a great service along with 2018’s hereditary i feel that horror is returning back to fright instead of scares if that makes any sense i love being frightened but i hate being scared ehh it’s hard to explain. but unsane completely does it for me. CLAIRE FOY IS AMAZING PERIODT.
