Sunset Boulevard
I hate that word. It's a return, a return to the millions of people who have never forgiven me for deserting the screen.
This might be the most meta film I've seen from the golden age of cinema. Its humor is full of sarcasm and I found this type of comedy felt surprisingly modern from something that came out almost eighty years ago. I was chuckling the entire runtime. I was pleased with the fact that this wasn't only a love letter to Hollywood, but a more realistic and oddly satirical look at it while still showing fondness to the industry.
What is meta too about the whole story is how much modern audiences crave return of classic characters. Actors still play their iconic roles even twenty, thirty or heck fifty years later. It's like just can't let things move. Of course there are actor that either get better with age or found roles perfect for them despite clearly being in their 80s.
What is ironic is that she is still 50 and you would think, die to the plot, by modern standards she's at least sixty or seventy. This film portrays an actress who thinks fans are waiting for her grabd return ecen 30 years later. We still observe instances of actors who were sheleved because of their age or personal dramas. The funny thing is nowdays it's not extraordinary. At least half the trailers yoy see in the cinema are things that rely on nostalgia with classic actors returning, not to mention how many comebacks the music industry has experienced in past years.
Despite all this, the point of the film is still relevant, maybe more than ever. It's funny to think this is the favorite film of current President of America when you see recurring scenes of Norma Desmond displaying pictures of herself all across her and mansion, living in delusion and believing the whole world loves her. At the same time, this is not a bad pick for a favorite film. It surely will be added to the list of mine.
There were a lot of elements that should be red flags for me. Don't get me wrong the opening is captivating but at this point we've seen many stiries that start with "you're probably wondering how i got into this situation" even if it's staged and phrased differently. It's full of referential and meta humor. It's a bit of a romantic triangle with a bit creepy relationship with a pretty lengthy age gap. It has a narration from our main character pretty frequently. Fortunately on screen, and on page, everything works perfectly.
Of course, you can't forget that Norma Desmond as Gloria Swanson is truly a start of this film and one of the reasons it's so brilliant. Funny how the carrer of the acttess that plays her was so similiar to the fictional character as she was too a silent film start that once "talkies" lost her status. Though important to not she remained mentally healthy unlike the character loosely based on her. William Holden might not be as great but makes a generally unlikeable or at least flawed character based on his action feel like a protagonist you root for.
I'm not exagerrating when I say think everyone should watch this and it has one of my favorite endings in the history of film. Doesn't that hurt that I love stiries about egomaniacs that you start to understand and feel bad for.
I am big. It's the pictures that got small
