Vertigo
Another case of a perfectly constructed film.
The script is some of the best stuff that's ever been written for a motion picture. I usually don't like convoluted films but there's nothing better than a story that makes you figure stuff out for yourself. The drawback for some is that it means you have to rewind and discuss it with someone for half an hour. I personally find that a lot of fun even if at times frustrating. The reason is, it makes the viewer engage with the art not only passively.
During the film you're actively collecting the clues, get lost along the way and then after the truth is revealed, analyse certain scenes to understand better HOW that happend, you constantly question everythinh in a "does this even makes sense" kind of way. A great script, will prove that it does. It will also make you feel dumb with foreshadowings or things the characters say that doesn't make sense. How did I not see that coming?! A great director will make you blind to these aspects on a first watch.
That's why I love films such as these and mostly find regular crime films boring. They either flat out show you what happened and then show you people slowly figuring it out (Columbo is the most obvious example) or things you possibly couldn't have seen coming but are very hard to believe. There are two inherently things I love about the script of Vertigo that make it special among other films which actively make you think. First one is the fact that this case is purely psychological thriller and not a usual Hitchock flick, which is murder mystery. Second one is, that it flat out shows you what happened while there is still 30 minutes of the movie left. While it has nothing to do with our main character, it changes our perspective of him on a pure psychological level and it's brilliant.
Of course, what doesn't hurt the picture that Jimmy Stewart is one of my favorite actors, the Vistavision colors are lovely and the musical score is some of the best I've heard from a film made before the 60s.
