Sinners
This movie encapsulates so much and does it so perfectly. It captures so much history, culture, trauma, spirituality and manages to weave it all together without ever feeling forced. It just works, and it hits hard. Especially in the spirit scene, seeing all the different spirits from various time periods and cultures was so visually stunning. And the fact that Sammie was the one guiding it all through his music made it even more powerful. From the start he was hinted at having the gift of a Griot, a musical storyteller from West African culture ( as well as different versions of Griots present in many different cultures) and in that scene it visually and emotionally becomes clear that he is not just playing music, he’s channeling memories and connecting through lifetimes. Which is beautiful to see how music transcends time and can truly connect people across different cultures. There is much more I could say about this movie cause it’s a masterpiece but I’ll leave it at that tid bit for now.
