Frankenstein
writing this minutes after getting out of the theater and i’m thinking so many thoughts i can hardly put them into words. i guess the biggest idea was the generational trauma shown from the very beginning. you see victor in his first scene with his father surrounded by his mother (if i had a nickel for every time mia goth played two women in the same movie, i’d have two nickels, which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice, right?) in her all-encompassing red gown. not long later, she’s dead with her blood scattered across victor’s shirt. red, red, red. he wears a red scarf around his neck as a teenager, showing the grief he’s still holding from her death. in a way, he never really grew up. he obsessed over an idea formed before his prefrontal cortex was even finished developing; he also has an affinity for milk, which i found interesting. it’s like a mimic of a mother’s love, but even then, it’s detached. no mother produced that—it was a cow living out its life on some random farm. through all of victor’s attempts to replicate life, they fall flat. why? because he’s not healed!!! he hits his creature the same way his father hit him!!! the quote “victor, you only listen when i hurt you” comes back to mind.
also, gosh, did i love elizabeth. i loved how her wedding gown had those bandages as a nod to the bride of frankenstein, given that she was the only person who truly wanted to understand the creature beyond analytical obsession (besides the old man, of course). it’s very telling that the people with his interests at heart were people often discarded in society. hmmmmm…
and about the creature! i loved him! his whole concept is so tragic: a stitch-up of countless other people and countless other memories, made only for the ego boost of an ill man. him being incapable of dying only shows how grief and pain so built up is too stubborn to rid of with something as, quite honestly, forgiving as death. all in all, spectacular movie. so beautiful i CRIED!!! the acting was just breathtaking, especially elordi’s insane body control. 10/10. love love love
