We are actually watching the movie he tried to make.
Guido said he doesn't know how to make people understand the movie he will make, he doesn't know how to put his idea into this movie, and for me. The truth is he just doesn't know how to escape from his reality, and the only thing that can make him accept the reality is honesty.
When his wife and Claudia told him the truth that he's a liar, in the end of the movie he cancelled the movie he wanted to make. I feel like he tried to finally accept the reality without using the "movie" thing as an illusion, as an escape for him.
I feel like this movie shows us how many times he try to make an illusion to escape from the reality, that's why the scenes are so absurd and random.
