Ready Player One
Today in the Oasis,
This book was one of the first I’d read in a really long time and as a nerd, self and socially described, reading about every silly little daydream a kid like me would’ve had was amazing. The book finds its downfall in Wade’s romanticism and blind eye towards toxic fandom culture and media, not to mention a full page on jorkin it.
Thats where the movie picks up the slack. Is it annoying to hear TJ Miller talk? Maybe. Is it a shoehorn for product placement? Yeah. BUT! It’s fun! It’s fun and nostalgic and adventurous and it doesn’t take itself more seriously than it should to be highbrow media for pretentious nerds. Everyone has a place in the CGI of a stupid little adventure movie.
