Maybe the real friends were the monsters we made along the way

Thought I was watching John Wick for a second there

My only impressions of Chevy chase are this and community. But maybe that’s all we need

You can hate on me for not glazing this but at least read the unfiltered bullet point thoughts: Someone should’ve warned me before I sat down to watch this with my dad and told him it got great reviews… Exposition was painfully long and didn’t really tell or show me a whole lot I needed for the rest of the movie. (Except that Lockjaw a super weirdo and perfida was a freak? And cheated? Was she into him or just wanted to r*pe him?) The group with Jungle and Beverly Hills murders the only other black character in the movie, an innocent security guard? In the process of robbing a bank? For justice? After Willa is born and we get some of the father-daughter connection I thought it started to come around, which I was really hoping for by the time we got there. The main antagonist was cartoonishly bad? I’m sure they were trying to make him look foolish on purpose which like??? Mission accomplished but it made it worse for me, I don’t know. Car chase scene was dope, ending was good. How is Lockjaw still alive after a shotgun to the face-turned car crash? Just to kill him off again? Guess he had it coming. Christmas club was the better villain, still tacky. Leo and Del Toro’s performance save this rating, loved them both and thought their work together were some of the best bits. People were talking like this was brilliant and well-thought out and a timeless masterpiece. Felt to me more like a Civil War/Taken mix with some on-the-nose social commentary thrown in to appear like more than what it was. If you’ve made it this far, I did like lots of it, and I think it will win several awards. Maybe I’m misunderstanding something but it just felt shallow. I think there’s a strong contrast between whatever selfish/flashy/destructive/anarchist fighting they were doing in the beginning that leads to the mother’s arrest and toppling of the rest of the crew in comparison to the helpful/heartfelt/genuine care of the older Bob, Sergio, and Willa. To me it showed the difference between hate manifesting more hatred, versus hate and oppression generating resistance stemming from love. I’ll have to rewatch again sometime. Drop a comment about why you liked it or why I’m wrong I genuinely want to know cause no one on my letterboxd gave this below a 4.
