Surprised by how much I liked Mel Gibson’s performance. There were some other good performances, too, but lot of them were stifled by the screenplay, especially Helena Bonham Carter’s Ophelia. Turns out when you cut Hamlet in half it’s not as good. This was a Blockbuster cover I was often drawn to as a kid lol A brooding Mel Gibson holding a sword by the blade must’ve spoken to the tween angst that was soon to blossom.

I resented this movie when it first came out b/c I, like most 90s Millennials, felt so precious towards the perfect ending of Toy Story 3. I brought that baggage with me when I watched it in like 2020 and wrote it off as thin and unnecessary. I was definitely too harsh. I was still bothered by how Buzz is sidelined. The bond between him and Woody is a major tentpole in the previous movies and they don’t have any meaningful interactions in this one. The “inner voice” plot line was funny but kind of shallow for Buzz’s main arc. That said, there’s a lot of wonderful things about this movie. Loved everything with Forky and Gabby Gabby. Woody’s ending felt exactly right. It seems like the themes I liked from Toy Story 4 will be expanded upon in 5 with the very tangible existential anxiety of tech, which I will gobble up like candy. Plus, looks like the other toys will be included more, which would be wonderful b/c they were seldomly used here. And it’s worth saying, this movie is STUNNING. Hats off to the DP. I think one of the 2020 Best Cinematography noms could have been bumped for this.

Put this on thinking it’d be a chill vibe hahahahahahahahaha
